Tortilla soup consists of a broth of tomato, garlic, onion and chilli and it’s served with fried corn tortilla pieces, avocado, cheese and sour cream. It is also, apparently, the name of a 2001 American comedy-drama film. Who knew?
I’ve never had this soup before so I was interested to try it when I saw it on the menu at the Blue Waters resort in Antigua. I didn’t add all the garnishes, just the tortilla – I’m not too sure about gooey sour cream and avocado in soup – and I wanted to actually be able to taste the soup broth as it was the first time.
The soup had a lovely warm flavour, slightly hot but not too much so, and it clearly had lots of spices as I could taste hints of cumin and either paprika or cayenne pepper. There didn’t seem to be any meat in the soup, though I have read this one is nice with chicken. It tasted lovely and rich, and the tortilla adds great texture. I thought that would be weird, but it’s not at all. I think next time I will try it with all the toppings and I’m also quite tempted to have a go at making this one at home.
